Last night we went to see the Smurfs 2.  It was actually our last choice but both the Galaxy and Southland Cinemas had nothing else playing after 7:30pm.  We hummed and hawed over whether we wanted to go but we were bored at home.  My little guy was still sick a bit and needed to get out of the house.  I had promised him a movie and he liked the poster for the Smurfs 2.

It actually wasn’t that bad.  It had 2 story lines running concurrently about step parents.  One of Smurfette whose father was Gargamel but whose step father was Papa Smurf and one of Patrick whose father had left when he was young but whose step father was Victor.

Throughout the movie, both step children realized that it’s not about where you come from but where you choose to go and who you choose to be.  In my experience, that’s totally right.  My daughter had a step parent for 17 years of her life.  He was a great dad to her.  My son has a new step parent and J is awesome with him.  Not all step parents are the wicked witches they are portrayed to be in the movies.

To all parents, step parents, grand parents, semi parents…teach your children and help them realize that you are doing the best you can with the tools you have.
